The Jua

FOUNDATION

MISSION

Our mission is to transition children out of working in the Dandora dumpsite in Nairobi, Kenya by providing them with education opportunities and essential support.

Through educational scholarships and access to necessary supplies and community engagement, we work to break the cycle of poverty and create a future where no child resorts to landfill labor.

Our Impact

Since our inception, we have transitioned 76 children out of landfill labor and into the classroom by providing scholarships that make education accessible and sustainable.

Our commitment goes beyond enrollment: each scholarship provides a full year of school fees, essential supplies, and ongoing support to help our scholars arrive prepared, remain in school, and have the opportunity to succeed.

By removing the financial barriers that can force children to work in the landfill instead of attending school, we are creating a pathway to a safer, more hopeful future. Through education, we aim to help break the cycle of poverty—giving each child the opportunity to learn, grow, and build a different future for themselves, their families, and their community.

ABOUT DANDORA

The Dandora dump site in Nairobi, Kenya, is a 30-acre landfill that serves as the city’s primary waste disposal area.

Despite being declared full in the mid-1990s, dumping persists, supporting a local economy where families rely on scavenging to earn money. Every day, over 3,000 adults and children sort through hazardous waste in search of recyclable materials they can sell. Children often miss school or never have the opportunity to attend because their families cannot afford school fees, uniforms or supplies.

The Jua Foundation believes education is one of the most powerful ways to create lasting change. By removing the barriers that prevent children from attending school, we help create opportunities that can transform generations.

“Every child deserves a chance beyond the landfill. Through The Jua Foundation, we are creating pathways to education and a brighter future.”
